Before casting you will adjust the dial to select the strength of magnetic control. This rotates the polarity of the two magnetic rings towards or away from each other, increasing or reducing the force of the magnetic field. Within a millisecond of the lead being released during the cast the spool hits its maximum speed. (Over 30,000 rpm in tests) The centrifugal force of the spools rotation causes the conducting collar to extend outwards into the magnetic field of the rings. When the collar enters the magnetic field, magnetic resistance is applied to the rotation of the spool, controlling M reducing its speed. As the spool speed and centrifugal force reduces the collar, which is under tension from a spring, moves back away from the magnets, continually reducing the magnetic resistance.
This in turn ensures that the spool is allowed to continue running as free as possible. The magnetic resistance adjusts by itself.
